Questions students ask

What's a TFSA, and can students open one?

A Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) lets your savings and investments grow tax-free. You need to be 18 or older, and the 2026 limit is $7,000.

What's an FHSA, and is it too early to open one?

A First Home Savings Account (FHSA) is for saving toward your first home: up to $8,000 a year and $40,000 for life, with tax-deductible contributions.

Do student loans charge interest?

Federal Canada Student Loans have been interest-free since April 1, 2023. Provincial loans vary, so check each one.

How do I build a credit score as a student?

Pay every bill on time and keep card balances low. Scores range from 300 to 900, and a short history takes time to build.

Do I need to file a tax return as a student?

It’s usually worth filing even with little income. It records your tuition amounts and unlocks benefits like the GST/HST credit.
